The Break-Up

I knew it was going to happen that day. There was nothing special about the day other than that it was yesterday’s tomorrow and yesterday I knew that day, was the last day. My chest burned and my heart sank into my hips as I sat and waited for her to come in a fury. I knew she would. She was my best friend after all. I saw her coming from my peripheral. Her nostrils flared and she had a switch in her walk.

If this were any other day I would’ve immediately apologized, because I knew why she was mad. But this wasn’t any other day and I wasn’t sorry. Instead, I sat and anticipated the storm.

“Where were you?” she asked more annoyed than usual.

“What do you mean?” I replied feeling quite annoyed myself. I hated when she asked questions like that, like I owed her an explanation, even if I did.

“You didn’t meet me by the lockers,” she retorted.

“So. You knew I would be right here where we always hang out.”

“But we always meet by the lockers,” she insisted.

“I don’t see what the big deal is.”

I was began to sound indifferent and this frustrated Robin.

“If you don’t want to hang out just say that!” she shouted at me. This wasn’t true. I just needed a break. Instead of saying that, I just said,

“Fine.”

Then, I walked away
